There was a hint of autumn in the air at the end of August, and after enduring some record-setting temperatures during this summer’s heat-wave it was a very welcome ‘change-of-pace’. It also ushers-in a new school-year and for CYO we launch our Second Year at Cerritos Elementary School on September 8.
Our next benefit concert will be Sunday, October 18 at 7 PM, at the Glendale City Church. The featured artist is Sara Andon, flutist, who has very impressive credentials and a resume of performances on a truly global scale. For more information about her please see the link to her website: http://saraandon.com/. The evening will be coordinated by cellist, Michael Kaufman. Other artists for the concert include: Dr. Luis Zuniga, soprano saxophone, who is one of our teachers with CYO; strings YuEun Kim, Benjamin Chilton and Michael Kaufman : pianist Brendan White and HOCKET. You may not recognize the names of these young musicians who have recently graduated from the Thornton School of Music at USC, many of them with doctorates in performance, but they are young artists who will not only inspire our students, but our audience as well.
The goal for the October 18 concert is to sell 400 tickets in the following categories: 20 VIP@$250 (there will be a VIP reception with the artists), 50 reserved@$75 and 330 General Admission@$20 for adults and $5 for students. To reserve your tickets for the Fall Benefit, please send an email to Dave@mycyo.org. You will receive instructions for payment and how to pick up your tickets.
The next benefit will be in January with the La Sierra University Orchestra, and there will be a Spring Benefit. It really takes constant fundraising to make an orchestra happen.
The CYO staff will be attending the YOLA : Take a Stand Symposium at the Bonaventure Hotel on October 6 and 7. This two day conference provides an opportunity for networking and learning more about the El Sistema model. That entire week, the Los Angeles Philharmonic will be joined by the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra from Venesuela. They will be performing all nine of the Beethoven symphonies during that week. We are working to find a way for CYO students to attend one of these concerts.
